How to Get to Hakuba: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hakuba Ski Resort is located about 280km northwest of Tokyo in Nagano prefecture. The quickest route is by bullet train to Nagano, followed by a direct coach to Hakuba. Total travel time is approximately 3 hours. Follow our step-by-step guide below to make your own way from Tokyo to Hakuba ski resort.

TOKYO TO HAKUBA

STEP 1: TOKYO AIRPORT TO TOKYO STATION

Narita Airport to Tokyo - Locate the Japan Rail (JR) station inside Terminal 1 and take the LTD.EXP Narita Express train to TOKYO station (60 minutes). Click for JR Schedule

Haneda Airport to Tokyo - Take the Tokyo Monorail Ltd. Express to HAMAMATSUCHO station (17 minutes). Transfer to the JR Yamanote Line (inner loop) for Osaki to TOKYO station (5 minutes). Click for JR Schedule

STEP 2: TOKYO STATION TO NAGANO STATION

Take the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Nagano Station. (90 minutes). Click for Schedule

Helpful hints:

  • Find the Shinkansen ticket office (you have to make your way out of the ‘JR’ section and into the ‘Shinkansen’ section of Tokyo Station). There will be a kiosk with ticket agents as well as automatic machines. Usually, some of the ticket agents speak some English.
  • Shinkansen tickets do not usually need to be purchased in advance unless you are travelling on a peak holiday day. You can purchase a reserved or non-reserved seat. We generally recommend purchasing a RESERVED seat to guarantee a seat.
  • You can take the ASAMA, KAGAYAKI, or HAKUTAKA Shinkansen (one of these leaves approximately every 15 minutes).

STEP 3: NAGANO STATION TO HAKUBA HAPPO BUS TERMINAL

Take the Alpico Highland Express Coach from the East Exit of Nagano Station (follow signs in English). The cost is about JPY 2,000 per person one way. This can be paid to the driver as you board the bus, or a ticket can be purchased from the Souvenir shop at the bus stop area. The bus departs from bus stop number 26, and runs approximately every 90 minutes. Click here for schedule. For the majority of Hakuba accommodations, you should disembark at the Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal, which is usually the 4th stop.

STEP 4: HAKUBA BUS TERMINAL TO YOUR ACCOMMODATION

Most accommodations in Hakuba offer complimentary pick up and drop off service from Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal.
