The Japanese football team thrilled spectators last night with an incredible performance taking them through to the knock-out round of the World Cup. The surprise isn’t that they got through – although it is the furthest a Japanese team has ever come in the World Cup away from home – the surprise is that they did so with such skill and confidence. Who would have predicted that names such as Keisuke Honda and Yuki Abe would have been showing the likes of Ronaldo and Rooney how it’s done?
Football (or sakka) is an up and coming sport in Japan with the J-league having become hugely popular with young Japanese in recent years. The question is whether the truly magnificent form shown by the Japan national team last night is the sign of things to come. We certainly hope so!
